Gandharva Mahavidyalaya North America in partnership with South Asia Institute presents “Sitar Concert” featuring Ravi Chary – a distinguished sitar player and Grammy award nominee from Goa, India, known for his mastery in both Indian classical and fusion music.
He will be accompanied by Amit Kavthekar, a groundbreaking Indian tabla player, renowned as the last ganda-bandhan (ordained disciple) of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha and prominent disciple of the late Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Ravi Chary
Ravi Chary is a distinguished Indian sitar virtuoso celebrated for his mastery in Hindustani classical music and innovative fusion genres. Born into a musical family in Panaji, Goa, he began his training under his father, Prabhakar Chary, a renowned tabla maestro. Further honing his skills, Ravi studied under legendary maestros such as Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, Ustaad Abdul Karim Khan, and Sitar Supremo Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. His performances are renowned for their emotive depth and technical brilliance, reflecting a unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles.
Ravi Chary’s artistry has garnered international acclaim, leading to performances at prestigious festivals like WOMAD and the World Sacred Spirit Festival. He has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, bridging classical Indian music with jazz and world music. Notably, he received Grammy nominations for his albums Miles from India (2008) and Ravi Chary Crossing (2012), underscoring his significant impact on global music. In addition to his musical achievements, Ravi has been honored with the Surmani Award and the Naad Chintamani Award, recognizing his contributions to the arts.
Amit Kavthekar
Amit Kavthekar is a distinguished Indian tabla maestro, renowned for his exceptional command over rhythm and his innovative approach to percussion. Born in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park neighborhood, he began his musical journey at the age of six under the tutelage of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha. By eleven, he became a ganda-bandhan disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha, a rare honor that solidified his place in the lineage of tabla greats. He further refined his craft under the guidance of Ustad Zakir Hussain, absorbing the intricacies of tabla playing and performance. Kavthekar’s style seamlessly blends the traditional Punjab baaj with influences from the Delhi baaj, resulting in a performance that is both technically precise and emotionally resonant.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kavthekar has collaborated with some of the most esteemed musicians in the world, including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His performances have graced renowned venues such as the United Nations Day Concert and prestigious festivals like the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav and Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan. In addition to his performance career, Kavthekar is a dedicated educator, serving as the Dean of Percussion at the New England School of Music and teaching at the American School of Bombay. His contributions to music have been recognized with the Taal–Mani award by Sur Singar Samiti in Mumbai, underscoring his impact on the global music community.
