Agenda
- Fundamental Techniques (30 minutes)
- Quick warm-up exercises with attention to tone, clarity, and speed
- Review basic strokes
- Hand placement, wrist position and posture
- Advanced techniques (1 hour)
- Application of basic strokes in fast compositions (Rela)
- Utilizing all fingers to navigate different speeds
- Left hand (Bayan) advanced techniques and Riyaz
- Improvisation (1 hour)
- Exploring rhythmic phrases (Tukras) and improvisation of Taal, Laya and Theka
- Advanced variations and compositions (Kaida and Rela)
- Q&A and Troubleshooting (1.5 hours)
- Address any challenges faced by participants with their technique, composition, or performance
- Troubleshooting common issues (e.g., speed control, balance between hands, clarity in fast compositions)
- Personal tips for advancing practice and refining technique

Pt. Shyam Kane
Pt. Shyam Kane is an Indian Tabla player of the Punjab Gharana. Pt. Kane is best known for being the first and foremost disciple and colleague of Utd. Zakir Hussain. Influenced by his brother, Mukund Kane, Pt. Kane began learning Tabla at age 16. Once he witnessed a performance by Utd. Zakir Hussain on Tabla, he desired to learn under the young master. Captivated by the balance, clarity and creativity of Utd. Zakir Hussain’s style, Pt. Kane immediately sought his tutelage. In 1975, Pt. Kane became a Gandabandhan disciple of Utd. Zakir Hussain. Pt. Kane has become a popular Tabla accompanist in India, North America, and Europe. He participated in the Festival of India (1985–1986) sponsored by the Government of India. He has taught Tabla at San Diego State University and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California. Pt. Kane has accompanied several renowned artists, including Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, Utd. Ali Akbar Khan, Smt. Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, Smt. N. Rajam, and Smt. Kishori Amonkar, Asha Khadilkar among others. He currently mentors numerous students of tabla both in India and the United States.
